Irene - Dunstable

Following physiotherapy treatment, during which I was advised to find a pilates teacher, I have known and worked with Shelley for some years, and can say she has been very quick grasp of the essence of my fibromyalgia problem.

I have been exceedingly happy with the results and it is a pleasure to work with Shelley, who communicates well and gives essential feedback as to the progress of my pilates sessions with her.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone considering whether pilates is something which might be of benefit to them.

I first met Shelley about seven years ago. At the time I was under going physiotherapy for a recurrent back problem which eventually turned out to be a slipped disc. I was also spending time and money with an osteopath who had recommended Pilates as a method to improve my overall posture and core stability. I went to Shelley’s introduction class and have been hooked ever since. After that first session I came away feeling more comfortable - and strange though it may sound a little taller and more able to move.

During those first few months Shelley saw me through some very painful times when I was a little tearful and thoroughly fed up. Her kind professional and encouraging approach helped me on the road to recovery. I have continued to attend her weekly classes and friends and family have been amazed at the improvements. As a child my younger sisters often laughed at my curved hunched position now I stand tall and my sisters comment how much improved my posture is. My osteopath who I now see rarely and usually only for work related issues has been equally impressed with the realignment of my spinal column. For me the fact that I can sit comfortably on the floor to play with my own children and those I teach is a real pleasure. For work I rarely have time off due to back pain.

Shelley has guided me through this transition into a more upright position. My core stability continues to improve all the time and I am much more aware of my posture during my everyday activities even when in the queue at the supermarket! I fondly call Shelley my ‘miracle worker’ She has helped me become stronger and more flexible. She works with care and consideration is always ready to listen when you are unable to carry out a particular exercise and has so many alternatives to offer. She will offer guidance to develop particular problem areas and truly is a Miracle Worker.

Thanks to Shelley’s good natured persistence, and encouragement, I have resisted getting plumper as I have got older.  I have also surprised my GP by growing an inch at 60 years of age – by standing correctly.  I have learned about some of the muscles in my body and how to use them correctly.  It’s taken 6 years to strengthen, tone and improve my suppleness, but it’s been an enjoyable journey, which I hope to continue for many more years.  In that time Shelley has matured as a teacher, always bringing new ideas etc. to the classes and making them such good fun.  She is also a very nice person!

My back problems started when I was seventeen. Forty five years later, I realise that you do not solve back problems, you manage them. I now look forward to continuing my active retirement, with a confidence I would not have imagined before the last five years of pilates with Shelley. Her dedication to self improvement and knowledge of physiology are great additions to the weekly classes and aid her considered approach to the specific needs of individuals.
